Hand Embroidery Tutorial - Chain Stitch

The Chain Stitch is a traditional hand embroidery technique that creates a decorative, looped pattern. It is worked by making a series of small, closely spaced stitches that are looped over one another, giving the appearance of a chain-like pattern. The Chain Stitch can be worked in a single thread or multiple threads for a more textured look. It is often used to create decorative borders, floral designs, and other embellishments on clothing and linens.

To work the Chain Stitch, you will need a needle and thread, and a fabric to embroider on. The technique is relatively simple and can be worked in a straight line or in a curved pattern, depending on the design. The stitch is often worked with a small running stitch that is looped over with a second thread, creating the chain-like pattern.

It's a versatile stitch that can be worked in various ways, and can be used in combination with other stitches to create more intricate designs. It's good to practice before you start your actual project.

Here are the basic steps for working the Chain Stitch:

Begin by making a small knot at the end of your thread. Bring your needle up through the fabric at the starting point for your chain.

Insert the needle back into the fabric a short distance away from the starting point, making sure to angle the needle in the same direction as the first stitch.

Bring the needle back up through the fabric a little further away from the second stitch.

Bring the needle down again through the fabric at the end of the first stitch, but this time pass the needle over the thread between the first and second stitches.

Repeat steps 2-4 to create a chain of stitches.

Continue working the Chain Stitch in this manner, making sure to keep the stitches closely spaced and to pass the needle over the thread between each pair of stitches.

Once you reach the end of your chain, bring the needle back through the fabric and make a small knot to secure the thread.

Note: You can adjust the spacing and size of your stitches depending on the desired look. You can also work the chain stitch in a curved pattern to create a more decorative design. As always, it's good to practice before you start your actual project.
