Hand Embroidery Tutorial - Buttonhole Insertion Stitch

The buttonhole insertion stitch is a hand embroidery technique used to create a buttonhole opening in a piece of fabric. It involves creating a series of closely spaced stitches around the edge of the buttonhole opening, with each stitch crossing over the previous one to create a tight, secure edge. The buttonhole insertion stitch is typically used in conjunction with a buttonhole stitch, which is used to create a decorative edge around the buttonhole.

To hand embroider a buttonhole insertion stitch, you will need a needle and thread, and a piece of fabric with a buttonhole opening.

  • Start by threading your needle and knotting the end of the thread.
  • Position the needle at the beginning of the buttonhole opening, with the knot resting on the wrong side of the fabric.
  • Bring the needle up through the fabric and take a small, diagonal stitch across the buttonhole opening, making sure that the stitch is close to the edge.
  • Bring the needle down again on the opposite side of the buttonhole opening, and take another small, diagonal stitch that overlaps the first one.
  • Repeat steps 3 and 4, taking small, diagonal stitches that overlap each other until you reach the end of the buttonhole opening.
  • Once you reach the end of the buttonhole opening, tie off the thread on the back of the fabric.

The buttonhole insertion stitch is now complete, and you can use it as a base for a buttonhole stitch, or sew a button on it.

Note: The size of the stitches and the spacing between them will depend on the fabric you're using and the size of the buttonhole. It's always a good idea to practice on scrap fabric first to get a feel for the technique and to test the size of the stitches.
